- Green sand molding is the most common foundry process in the world. The sand is not actually “green” but rather wet sand. In addition to sand in the system a mixture of clay and water is added to yield the required characteristics of the sand system. Melling Engineered Aluminum Castings uses olivine sand over silica sand for improved dimensional stability and better cast surface finish.
- In the automated molding process sand is blown into the flask on the cope and drag sides of the matchplate. The flask is then squeezed to compact the sand. The matchplate retracts exposing the mold where cores (if required) are to be set. The mold is then stripped from the flask and transferred to the mold line to be poured.
- Utilizing two automated mold lines Melling Engineered Aluminum Castings is capable of running short orders to medium volume production. Tooling for each machine can be aluminum pressure cast plates, machined aluminum, or aluminum plates with redboard patterns and gating.
- Green sand molding is cost effective for low- to med- volume production lot sizes with reduced costs compared to other casting processes.
